Why is my smart plug not responding?
The short answer
Your smart plug usually stops responding because it lost power, dropped off 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, or needs a quick reset and reconnect.
How to fix it
1) Check power first
- Make sure the plug is fully seated in the wall.
- Test the outlet with another device.
- Look for the plug’s status light. No light often means no power.
2) Check your Wi-Fi
- Most smart plugs only support 2.4 GHz, not 5 GHz.
- If you changed router name or password, the plug may be disconnected.
- Move the plug closer to the router for setup, then move it back.
3) Restart everything
- Unplug the smart plug for 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Restart your router.
- Close and reopen the smart home app.
4) Reconnect in the app
- Remove the plug from the app.
- Put it in pairing mode (usually hold button for 5–10 seconds).
- Add it again as a new device.
5) Update and reset
- Update the app and firmware if available.
- If nothing works, do a factory reset and set it up from scratch.
When should you worry?
- The plug gets hot, smells burnt, or crackles.
- It keeps disconnecting even near a stable router.
- It won’t power on after reset attempts.
If you see safety signs, stop using it and replace it.
