Why is my smart light flickering?
The short answer
Your smart light flickers because of a compatibility issue with your dimmer switch, a weak Wi-Fi connection, or a problem with the bulb itself.
Most common causes
1. Incompatible dimmer switch
This is the number one reason. Old dimmer switches were designed for incandescent bulbs, not LEDs. They send the wrong type of signal to smart bulbs, causing them to flicker or strobe. Most smart bulbs don’t need a dimmer at all — they dim through the app.
2. Loose bulb
Sometimes the fix is embarrassingly simple. If the bulb isn’t screwed in all the way, the electrical contact is inconsistent and the light flickers. Turn it off, let it cool, and tighten it.
3. Wi-Fi or connectivity issues
Smart bulbs that lose their connection to your network may flicker as they try to reconnect. This is especially common with bulbs far from your router or on an overloaded network.
4. Voltage fluctuations
If other high-power appliances (like an AC unit or microwave) are on the same circuit, they can cause brief voltage dips that make your smart light flicker.
5. Firmware or app glitch
Outdated firmware on the bulb can cause erratic behavior. Check the manufacturer’s app for updates.
How to fix it
- Replace your dimmer switch with a standard on/off switch, or use a dimmer rated for LED and smart bulbs
- Tighten the bulb in its socket
- Move your router closer or add a Wi-Fi extender to improve signal strength
- Avoid overloading circuits — plug high-draw appliances into a different outlet
- Update the bulb firmware through the manufacturer’s app
- Factory reset the bulb if nothing else works — instructions vary by brand, but usually involve toggling the switch on and off several times
When should you worry?
If every light on a circuit flickers (not just the smart bulb), you may have a wiring issue. Contact an electrician — loose wiring can be a fire hazard.
