Why is my phone storage full?

The short answer

Your phone storage is full because apps, photos, videos, cached data, and messaging attachments quietly pile up over time — even if you haven’t downloaded anything recently.

The biggest space hogs

1. Photos and videos

This is usually the number one culprit. A single minute of video can take up 100-400 MB depending on quality. If you’ve never cleaned out your camera roll, it could be using tens of gigabytes.

2. Apps and app data

Apps themselves take up space, but the data they store is often much larger. Games can cache gigabytes of content. Social media apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook store tons of viewed content locally.

3. Messages and attachments

Every photo, video, and GIF sent or received through iMessage, WhatsApp, or other messaging apps gets saved on your phone. Years of group chat media adds up fast.

4. Cached and offline data

Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, and podcast apps all store offline content. Browser caches, map data, and downloaded files also eat into your storage silently.

5. “Other” or system storage

Both iPhone and Android use storage for system files, update packages, and logs. On iPhones, this mysterious “Other” category can sometimes balloon to several gigabytes.

How to free up space

  • Check what’s using storage — go to Settings, then Storage (iPhone) or Storage in Device Care (Android) to see a breakdown
  • Delete old photos and videos — or back them up to Google Photos or iCloud and remove the originals
  • Offload unused apps — on iPhone, enable “Offload Unused Apps” in Settings to automatically remove apps you don’t use while keeping their data
  • Clear app caches — on Android, go to each app’s settings and tap “Clear Cache.” On iPhone, deleting and reinstalling the app is the easiest way
  • Clean up messaging apps — in WhatsApp or iMessage, delete old conversations with lots of media
  • Remove downloaded content — check Spotify, Netflix, and podcast apps for offline downloads you no longer need
  • Empty the “Recently Deleted” folder — deleted photos sit in the trash for 30 days, still using space

When should you worry?

If your storage fills up again within days of cleaning it, an app may be malfunctioning and hoarding data. Check which app is growing fastest in your storage settings. If system storage is unusually large, a software update or factory reset (after backing up) usually fixes it.
