Why is my Nest thermostat offline?
The short answer
Your Nest thermostat is most likely offline because it lost its Wi-Fi connection, its battery is too low to maintain a network connection, or your router settings changed.
Common reasons it goes offline
Wi-Fi connection dropped
This is the most frequent cause. Your thermostat needs a stable Wi-Fi signal to stay connected to the Google Home app and the cloud.
- Your router restarted or temporarily lost power
- The signal is too weak where the thermostat is mounted
- Your Wi-Fi password changed and the thermostat still has the old one
Low battery
Nest thermostats charge through your HVAC system’s wiring. If the battery drops too low, the thermostat shuts off Wi-Fi to save power.
- No C-wire connected means the thermostat charges more slowly and may struggle to keep up
- The HVAC system hasn’t run in a while, so the thermostat hasn’t had a chance to recharge
Router or network changes
- You got a new router and the thermostat is still trying to connect to the old network
- Your router switched bands and the thermostat can’t connect to the new one (Nest only supports 2.4 GHz on most models)
How to fix it
- Check your Wi-Fi — Make sure your home network is working. Try loading a website on your phone.
- Restart the thermostat — Pull it off the base, wait 10 seconds, and snap it back on.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi — On the thermostat, go to Settings > Network and select your network again.
- Check the battery — Go to Settings > Technical Info on the thermostat. The battery voltage should be above 3.6V. If it’s lower, your wiring may need a C-wire.
- Restart your router — Unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and wait a few minutes.
- Move your router closer — If the signal is weak, consider a Wi-Fi extender near the thermostat.
When should you worry?
If your thermostat keeps going offline repeatedly, it usually points to a wiring issue or a weak Wi-Fi signal. A missing C-wire is the most common underlying problem — it means the thermostat never fully charges. An HVAC technician can add one for a relatively low cost, and it usually solves the issue for good.
