Why is my Chromebook touchpad not working?
The short answer
Your Chromebook touchpad usually stops working because of a software glitch, dirty surface, or incorrect settings — and a quick restart or cleaning often fixes it.
Most common causes
1. A temporary software glitch
Chrome OS occasionally freezes up or loses track of input devices. This is the most common reason, and it’s almost always fixed by restarting your Chromebook.
2. Dirt or moisture on the touchpad
Grease, crumbs, or water on the touchpad surface can confuse the sensor. Even a thin film of moisture from your fingers can cause erratic behavior or make the touchpad completely unresponsive.
3. Touchpad settings got changed
Someone (or a system update) may have adjusted your touchpad speed to the lowest setting, disabled tap-to-click, or changed scrolling behavior. This can make it feel like the touchpad is broken when it’s really just misconfigured.
4. An external mouse is interfering
Some Chromebook models behave differently when a USB or Bluetooth mouse is connected. In rare cases, the touchpad may be partially disabled or deprioritized when another pointing device is active.
5. A hardware issue
If none of the software fixes work, the touchpad ribbon cable inside may have come loose, or the touchpad itself could be damaged — especially if the Chromebook was dropped recently.
How to fix it
- Restart your Chromebook — hold the power button, shut down, and turn it back on
- Clean the touchpad with a soft, dry cloth — make sure your fingers are clean and dry too
- Check touchpad settings in Settings > Device > Touchpad and adjust speed or re-enable tap-to-click
- Disconnect external mice (unplug USB mice or turn off Bluetooth ones) and test again
- Do a hard reset by holding Refresh + Power for 10 seconds — this resets hardware connections without deleting files
- Try guest mode to rule out profile-specific issues — if it works there, a Chrome extension may be the culprit
When should you worry?
If a hard reset and cleaning don’t help, and the touchpad doesn’t work in guest mode either, it’s likely a hardware problem. Contact the manufacturer or take it to a repair shop. In the meantime, a USB or Bluetooth mouse works as a quick workaround.
