Why is my AirPods volume so low?
The short answer
Your AirPods volume is probably low because of a software setting like a volume limit, dirty speaker grilles, or a Bluetooth connection issue — not because they are broken.
Common reasons for low AirPods volume
Volume limit is turned on
Apple has a built-in feature that caps your maximum volume to protect your hearing. If someone enabled it (or it turned on after an update), your AirPods will never get fully loud.
- Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety
- Check if Reduce Loud Audio is toggled on
- Turn it off or raise the decibel limit
Earwax and debris buildup
This is the most common hardware cause. The tiny speaker grilles on AirPods collect earwax and dust over time, which physically blocks the sound.
- Clean the grilles gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush
- Never use water, sharp objects, or compressed air
- For AirPods Pro, remove the silicone tips and clean underneath
Low Battery
When your AirPods battery gets very low, the volume can drop noticeably. Check your battery level in the Batteries widget or by opening the case near your iPhone.
Bluetooth connection issues
A weak or glitchy Bluetooth connection can cause lower-than-normal audio. Try this:
- Put your AirPods back in the case for 15 seconds, then reconnect
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on from Settings > Bluetooth
- If that fails, forget the device and re-pair them
Audio balance is off-center
If one AirPod sounds quieter than the other, the audio balance may have shifted.
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual
- Make sure the Balance slider is centered
How to fix it
Try these steps in order:
- Check your volume limit and turn it off
- Clean the speaker grilles thoroughly
- Restart your iPhone and reconnect your AirPods
- Reset your AirPods by holding the setup button on the case for 15 seconds until the light flashes amber, then white
When should you worry?
If you have cleaned them, removed all volume limits, and reset the connection but one or both AirPods are still noticeably quiet, the speaker hardware may be wearing out. This is more common with AirPods over two years old. At that point, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for a replacement.
