Why does my Wi-Fi keep disconnecting?
The short answer
Your Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting because your device is losing a stable link to your router, usually from weak signal, interference, or router/device settings.
Why it happens
1) Weak signal
- Too far from the router or too many walls in between
- Signal gets worse in bedrooms, basements, and corners
2) Interference
- Nearby networks on the same channel
- Microwaves, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors, and cordless phones
3) Router issues
- Router is old, overheating, or needs a reboot
- Too many devices connected at once
4) Device settings
- Power-saving mode can turn Wi-Fi off
- Outdated Wi-Fi drivers or phone software
How to fix it
- Restart your router and device first (simple but effective)
- Move closer to the router and test again
- Place router higher and central, not behind metal objects
- Switch between 2.4 GHz (better range) and 5 GHz (better speed nearby)
- Update router firmware and device software
- Forget the network, then reconnect
- Change Wi-Fi channel in router settings if your area is crowded
- If possible, use a mesh system or Wi-Fi extender for dead zones
When should you worry?
- It disconnects on every device, all day
- You see frequent drops even right next to the router
- Router restarts by itself or gets very hot
- Internet drops continue after updates and channel changes
If those happen, contact your provider or replace the router.
