Why does my PC not wake up from sleep mode?

The short answer

Your PC isn’t waking from sleep because something is preventing it from receiving or responding to the wake signal — usually a power setting, a driver issue, or a USB device that’s not allowed to wake the computer.

Most common causes

1. Your keyboard or mouse isn’t allowed to wake the PC

By default, some computers don’t let USB devices like your keyboard or mouse wake the system. If pressing keys or clicking does nothing, this is likely the reason.

2. Outdated or buggy drivers

Graphics card and chipset drivers play a big role in sleep and wake behavior. If they’re outdated or buggy, your PC may go to sleep fine but fail to come back.

3. Hybrid sleep or hibernation conflicts

Windows has multiple power-saving states — sleep, hibernate, and hybrid sleep. Sometimes these conflict with each other or with your hardware, causing the PC to get stuck in a state it can’t exit.

4. A recent Windows update

Windows updates occasionally break sleep and wake functionality. If the problem started after an update, that’s likely the cause.

5. BIOS or power settings

Some BIOS settings control whether the PC can wake from sleep using USB, network, or keyboard input. If these are disabled, your PC essentially goes deaf while sleeping.

How to fix it

  • Let your keyboard and mouse wake the PC — open Device Manager, find your keyboard and mouse under their sections, right-click each one, go to Properties, then the Power Management tab, and check “Allow this device to wake the computer”
  • Update your drivers — especially graphics and chipset drivers from your manufacturer’s website
  • Disable hybrid sleep — go to Control Panel, Power Options, Change Plan Settings, Change Advanced Power Settings, and under Sleep, set “Allow hybrid sleep” to Off
  • Check your BIOS — restart and enter BIOS setup (usually by pressing Del or F2 at startup), then look for USB wake or power management options and make sure they’re enabled
  • Run the power troubleshooter — go to Settings, System, Troubleshoot, then Other Troubleshooters, and run the Power troubleshooter

When should you worry?

If your PC never wakes and you always have to force a restart by holding the power button, you’re losing any unsaved work each time. This isn’t harmful to your hardware in the short term, but it’s worth fixing. If the problem persists after trying the steps above, you can disable sleep mode entirely in Power Options as a temporary workaround until a driver or system update resolves it.
