Why does my iPhone screen not respond to touch after getting wet?
The short answer
Water on or inside the screen interferes with the electrical signals your iPhone uses to detect touch, causing it to ignore or misread your taps.
How your touchscreen works
Your iPhone screen uses a grid of tiny electrical sensors. When your finger touches the glass, it disrupts the electrical field, and the phone calculates exactly where you tapped.
Water causes problems because it conducts electricity just like your finger does. Droplets on the screen create false touches or block real ones, confusing the sensor grid completely.
Common reasons it stops responding
1. Water on the screen surface
Even a thin film of moisture can cause ghost touches or make the screen unresponsive. The phone can’t tell the difference between your finger and a water droplet.
2. Moisture inside the phone
If water got past the seals, it can interfere with the digitizer — the layer under the glass that actually detects touch. This is more serious than surface water.
3. The Liquid Contact Indicator was triggered
Apple’s built-in moisture detection may disable the charging port and affect other functions when it detects water, as a safety measure.
How to fix it
- Wipe the screen completely dry with a soft, lint-free cloth
- Dry your fingers — wet hands cause the same problem
- Power off the phone and let it air-dry for several hours
- Do not use a hair dryer or rice — heat can cause more damage, and rice dust can clog ports
- Place it in front of a gentle fan or in a dry room with good airflow
- Wait at least 5 hours before turning it back on
When should you worry?
If the screen still doesn’t respond after the phone is completely dry, the water may have damaged internal components. Signs of deeper damage include:
- Screen flickering or showing discolored patches
- Random ghost touches happening on their own
- The screen works in some areas but not others
In these cases, visit an Apple Store or authorized repair shop. Internal water damage typically isn’t covered under standard warranty, but AppleCare+ with theft and loss may help.
