Why does my computer keep restarting?
The short answer
Your computer keeps restarting because it’s hitting a problem it can’t recover from — usually a failed update, overheating, faulty hardware, or a corrupted system file.
Most common causes
1. A Windows update got stuck
Windows sometimes restarts repeatedly while trying to install or roll back an update. If an update failed halfway through, your PC may keep rebooting in an endless loop trying to finish.
2. Overheating
When your computer gets too hot, it shuts down automatically to protect itself. If the cooling problem isn’t fixed, it’ll restart and overheat again — creating a loop. Dust buildup, a broken fan, or blocked vents are typical culprits.
3. Failing hardware
A dying power supply, bad RAM stick, or failing hard drive can all cause random restarts. If your computer restarts without warning — no blue screen, no error message — the power supply is a likely suspect.
4. Driver or software conflicts
A recently installed driver or program can cause crashes that trigger automatic restarts. This is especially common after updating your graphics card driver.
5. Malware
Some types of malware can cause your system to restart repeatedly, either as a side effect of the damage they do or intentionally.
How to fix it
- Boot into Safe Mode — press F8 during startup (or hold Shift and click Restart) to start with minimal drivers, then uninstall recent updates or programs
- Check for overheating — make sure vents are clear, fans are spinning, and there’s no heavy dust inside
- Disable automatic restart — right-click This PC, go to Properties, then Advanced System Settings, and under Startup and Recovery, uncheck “Automatically restart” so you can see the actual error
- Run a virus scan in Safe Mode using Windows Defender or another antivirus tool
- Undo recent changes — uninstall any new drivers, programs, or updates that were added before the problem started
- Check your power supply — if restarts happen randomly with no error, the PSU may need replacing
When should you worry?
If your computer restarts during normal use with no pattern, or if you smell something burning, shut it down immediately. Random restarts with no blue screen often point to a hardware failure that can get worse over time. Back up your files and have it looked at by a professional.
