Why does my computer keep minimizing my games?

The short answer

Your game keeps minimizing because something else on your computer is stealing focus — usually a notification, a background app, or a Windows process demanding attention.

Most common causes

1. Notifications and popups

Windows notifications, antivirus alerts, or chat app popups can all pull focus away from your game. Even a small tooltip from your system tray can be enough to minimize a fullscreen application.

2. Background apps stealing focus

Programs like media players, download managers, or scheduled tasks sometimes request focus when they finish an action or need attention. When they do, Windows pulls you out of your game.

3. Windows key or keyboard shortcuts

Accidentally pressing the Windows key, Alt+Tab, or Ctrl+Esc will immediately minimize your game. Some keyboards have extra keys that can trigger this without you realizing.

4. Game bar or overlays

The Xbox Game Bar, Discord overlay, or GPU software (like GeForce Experience) can conflict with fullscreen games and cause them to minimize unexpectedly.

5. Display driver crashing briefly

If your graphics driver crashes and recovers (even for a split second), it can kick you out of fullscreen. You might see a brief black screen before it happens.

How to fix it

  • Turn on Focus Assist — go to Settings, then System, then Focus Assist, and set it to “Alarms only” while gaming to block notifications
  • Close unnecessary background apps — check your system tray and Task Manager for anything you don’t need running
  • Disable Game Bar — go to Settings, then Gaming, then Xbox Game Bar, and toggle it off
  • Use borderless windowed mode — many games offer this in display settings, and it prevents true minimizing when focus shifts
  • Check your keyboard — make sure no keys are sticking, especially the Windows key. Many gaming keyboards have a switch to disable it
  • Update your graphics driver — grab the latest version from NVIDIA or AMD to fix driver crash issues
  • Disable startup programs — press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, click the Startup tab, and disable anything you don’t need

When should you worry?

If your game minimizes and you see a brief black screen or flickering, your graphics driver may be failing. Update your drivers first, and if it keeps happening, your GPU could be overheating or starting to fail. Monitor your temperatures with a tool like HWMonitor during gameplay.
