Why does my computer have no sound?

The short answer

Your computer usually has no sound because the volume is muted, the wrong output device is selected, or an audio driver needs to be updated — and most fixes take under a minute.

Common reasons and fixes

1. The volume is muted or turned way down

This is the most common cause and the easiest to miss. Check the volume icon in your taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac) and make sure it’s not muted. Also check the volume slider inside the app you’re using — many apps like browsers and media players have their own volume controls.

2. Wrong audio output selected

Your computer might be sending sound to the wrong place. If you’ve recently plugged in headphones, connected a monitor via HDMI, or used Bluetooth audio, your system may still be routing sound there. Click the speaker icon and check which output device is selected. Switch it to your speakers or headphones.

3. A cable is loose or unplugged

For external speakers or headphones, make sure the cable is fully plugged into the correct port. The audio jack is usually the green one on desktop PCs. Also check that your speakers are powered on and their own volume knob isn’t turned down.

4. Audio driver issues

After a system update, your audio driver can stop working properly. On Windows, open Device Manager, expand “Sound, video and game controllers,” right-click your audio device, and select Update driver. If that doesn’t work, try Uninstall device and restart — the driver will reinstall automatically.

On Mac, resetting the Core Audio process often helps. Open Terminal and type: sudo killall coreaudiod

5. Bluetooth audio not connecting

If you’re expecting sound from a Bluetooth speaker or headphones, they may not be paired or connected. Go to your Bluetooth settings and check that the device is connected, not just paired.

How to fix it step by step

  • Step 1: Make sure the volume isn’t muted — check system volume and in-app volume
  • Step 2: Verify the correct output device is selected
  • Step 3: Check physical connections for external speakers or headphones
  • Step 4: Restart your computer — this clears many audio glitches
  • Step 5: Update or reinstall your audio driver

When should you worry?

If you’ve tried all the steps above and still have no sound, your sound card or audio hardware may have failed. Try plugging in USB headphones or a USB speaker — if those work, the issue is with your built-in audio hardware, and you may need a repair or an external USB sound adapter as a workaround.
