Why does my coffee maker not brew?
The short answer
Your coffee maker most likely isn’t brewing because of a clog from mineral buildup, a water reservoir issue, or a simple power problem.
Common reasons your coffee maker won’t brew
Here are the most frequent culprits, starting with the easiest to fix:
Power and settings issues
- It’s not plugged in or the outlet is dead — try a different outlet or check your circuit breaker.
- The brew cycle wasn’t started — some machines require you to press a button after setting up, not just close the lid.
- The timer is set wrong — if your machine has a delayed brew feature, it may be waiting for a scheduled time.
Water problems
- The reservoir is empty or not seated properly — remove it, fill it, and click it back into place firmly.
- The lid or reservoir trigger isn’t engaged — many machines have a safety switch that prevents brewing if the reservoir isn’t detected.
Clogs and mineral buildup
This is the most common cause for machines that suddenly stop mid-brew or only drip slowly.
- Mineral deposits (scale) block the internal tubes — this happens naturally over time, especially with hard water.
- Old coffee grounds are stuck in the filter basket or needle — single-serve machines like Keurigs are especially prone to this.
How to fix it
- Descale your machine — run a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water through a full brew cycle, then run two cycles of plain water to rinse. Do this every 1-3 months.
- Clean the needle or filter area — use a paperclip or the cleaning tool that came with your machine to clear any blockage.
- Check the water line — for plumbed-in machines, make sure the water supply valve is open.
- Try a hard reset — unplug the machine for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
When should you worry?
If your coffee maker still won’t brew after descaling and cleaning, or if you notice leaking, burning smells, or unusual noises, stop using it. The internal pump or heating element may have failed, and at that point it’s usually cheaper to replace the machine than repair it.
