What is Zigbee?
The short answer
Zigbee is a wireless communication protocol that lets smart home devices like lights, sensors, plugs, and locks talk to each other using very little power.
How it works
Zigbee sends small, low-power radio signals between devices on the 2.4 GHz frequency. It’s not designed for streaming video or browsing the web — it handles simple commands like “turn off the light” or “motion detected.”
To use Zigbee devices, you typically need a Zigbee hub (sometimes called a coordinator or bridge). Popular ones include the Amazon Echo with built-in Zigbee, the Philips Hue Bridge, and SmartThings hubs. The hub connects to your home network and manages all your Zigbee devices.
Mesh networking
Like Z-Wave, Zigbee uses a mesh network. Every non-battery-powered Zigbee device acts as a repeater, passing signals along to other devices. The more devices you have, the stronger your network gets.
This means a command from your hub can hop through several devices to reach one at the far end of your house, even if it’s out of direct range.
Zigbee vs Wi-Fi vs Z-Wave
- Zigbee — low power, needs a hub, supports lots of devices cheaply, but shares the 2.4 GHz band with Wi-Fi
- Wi-Fi — no hub needed, but smart devices drain batteries fast and can clog your network
- Z-Wave — uses a dedicated frequency with less interference, but devices tend to cost more
Should you care about Zigbee?
Zigbee is a proven, reliable choice for home automation, especially if you already own Zigbee devices or a compatible hub. Many popular products from Philips Hue, IKEA, and Samsung SmartThings use it.
That said, the newer Matter standard is becoming the future of smart homes. Matter works across multiple protocols and makes brand mixing easier. If you’re starting fresh, look for devices that support Matter — many of which still use Zigbee under the hood through the Thread protocol.
