What is data throttling?

The short answer

Data throttling is when your internet or mobile provider deliberately slows down your connection speed, usually after you have used a certain amount of data.

How it works

Most internet and phone plans come with a data limit, even so-called “unlimited” plans. Once you hit that limit, your provider does not cut you off entirely. Instead, they reduce your speed to a fraction of what you normally get.

For example, your phone plan might offer fast speeds up to 50 GB per month. After that, your provider may throttle your connection down to 1-3 Mbps — enough for basic browsing and messaging, but too slow for streaming video or downloading large files.

Why providers do it

  • Network management — slowing heavy users prevents the network from getting overloaded for everyone else
  • Plan limits — your plan may include a specific amount of high-speed data before throttling kicks in
  • Congestion — during busy times, providers may temporarily slow down the heaviest users first
  • Cost control — it is cheaper for providers than building more network capacity

How to tell if you are being throttled

You might be experiencing throttling if:

  • Your speed drops dramatically at a certain time each month
  • Streaming video suddenly looks blurry even though your connection was fine earlier
  • Speed tests show much lower numbers than what your plan promises
  • Certain apps or websites feel slower than others — some providers throttle specific services like video streaming

Run a speed test before and after connecting to a VPN. If your speed improves with a VPN, your provider may be throttling specific types of traffic.

How to deal with it

  • Check your plan details — find out exactly how much high-speed data you get before throttling starts
  • Monitor your data usage in your phone or router settings so you know when you are getting close to the limit
  • Upgrade your plan if you consistently hit the cap
  • Use Wi-Fi whenever possible to save your mobile data allowance
  • Try a VPN if your provider is throttling specific services — this hides what type of traffic you are using
  • Switch providers if throttling is too aggressive — some carriers are more generous than others
