What is a widget?

The short answer

A widget is a mini version of an app that sits on your home screen and shows you useful information at a glance, without needing to open the full app.

How widgets work

Think of a widget as a window into an app. Instead of tapping an app icon, waiting for it to open, and then finding what you need, a widget puts that information right on your home screen.

For example:

  • A weather widget shows the current temperature and forecast
  • A calendar widget shows your upcoming events
  • A clock widget displays the time in a different style or time zone
  • A music widget lets you play, pause, and skip tracks
  • A news widget shows top headlines

Widgets update automatically in the background, so the information stays current without you doing anything.

Widgets on different devices

iPhone

Apple added home screen widgets in iOS 14. You can add them by long-pressing your home screen and tapping the plus icon in the top corner. They come in small, medium, and large sizes.

Android

Android has supported widgets since the beginning. Long-press your home screen and select Widgets to browse what is available. Android widgets tend to be more interactive, letting you tap buttons directly on the widget.

Windows and Mac

Both operating systems have their own widget systems. Windows 11 has a widgets panel you can open from the taskbar. Mac has widgets in the Notification Center and on the desktop in macOS Sonoma and later.

Widgets vs. apps

A widget is not a replacement for the full app. It shows a limited snapshot of information and sometimes lets you do quick actions. For anything more detailed, tapping the widget usually opens the full app.

Should you use widgets?

Widgets are worth setting up if you find yourself opening the same apps repeatedly just to check one thing. They save time and keep your most important information visible at all times.

If your home screen feels cluttered, stick to two or three widgets for the apps you check most often, like weather, calendar, or to-do lists.
