What is a newsletter?
The short answer
A newsletter is a recurring email that someone or some company sends to a list of people who signed up to receive it, usually covering a specific topic.
How it works
You give your email address to a website, creator, or business. In return, they send you emails on a regular schedule — daily, weekly, or monthly. Each email typically covers news, tips, updates, or stories around a particular subject.
Unlike random marketing emails, newsletters are something you choose to receive. You subscribe, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
Common types of newsletters
- News roundups — a summary of the biggest stories in tech, business, sports, or any topic
- Personal blogs — writers sharing essays, opinions, or advice straight to your inbox
- Company updates — businesses keeping customers informed about new products or features
- Educational — lessons, tips, or tutorials delivered on a regular schedule
Why do people subscribe to newsletters?
- Convenience — the information comes to you instead of you searching for it
- Curation — someone else filters through the noise and picks what matters
- Trust — you hear directly from a person or brand you follow, not an algorithm
- Consistency — they arrive on a predictable schedule
Are newsletters free?
Most newsletters are free. Some offer a paid tier with extra content, and a few are paid-only. Platforms like Substack, Mailchimp, and Beehiiv make it easy for anyone to start one.
When should you worry?
- You did not sign up — if newsletters appear in your inbox that you never subscribed to, it could be spam. Mark it as spam or look for an unsubscribe link at the bottom.
- They ask for sensitive info — a real newsletter will never ask for your password, credit card, or personal details inside the email.
- Your inbox is overwhelmed — it is fine to unsubscribe from newsletters you no longer read. Every legitimate newsletter includes an unsubscribe link at the bottom of each email.
