What is a game mod?
The short answer
A game mod (short for “modification”) is a change made by players or fans that alters a video game — adding new content, changing how it looks, or tweaking how it plays.
How mods work
Mods are created by people outside the game’s official development team. They modify the game’s files to do things like:
- Add new content — extra levels, characters, weapons, or storylines
- Change visuals — better textures, lighting, or completely new art styles
- Tweak gameplay — adjust difficulty, change game rules, or add new mechanics
- Fix problems — patch bugs or improve performance that the developers haven’t addressed
Some mods are small tweaks, while others are so large they feel like entirely new games. These are often called total conversions.
Where to find mods
Mods are most common on PC games. Popular places to find them include:
- Steam Workshop — built-in mod support for many Steam games
- Nexus Mods — one of the largest modding sites, especially for games like Skyrim and Fallout
- The game’s official website or forums — some developers host mods directly
Console games have much more limited mod support, though a few games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim allow mods on PlayStation and Xbox.
When should you worry?
Most mods are safe and made by passionate fans, but keep a few things in mind:
- Download from trusted sources — mods from unknown websites can contain malware
- Mods can break your game — always back up your save files before installing mods
- Online play and mods don’t mix — using mods in multiplayer games can get your account banned
- Not all games allow mods — modding a game that doesn’t officially support it may violate its terms of service
Getting started safely
- Start with popular, well-reviewed mods that have thousands of downloads
- Use a mod manager (like Vortex or Mod Organizer) instead of manually moving files around
- Read the installation instructions carefully — most mod issues come from skipping steps
- Install mods one at a time so you can identify which one causes a problem if something breaks
