What does "This Meeting Is Being Recorded" notification mean on Zoom?
The short answer
It means the meeting host (or a co-host) has started recording the call, and Zoom is required by law to tell you.
Why does Zoom show this notification?
Many places have laws that require all participants to know when a conversation is being recorded. Zoom shows this popup to every person in the meeting so no one is recorded without their knowledge.
When you see this notification, you have two choices:
- Continue — you stay in the meeting and agree to being recorded
- Leave Meeting — you exit the call if you don’t want to be recorded
There is no option to stay in the meeting and opt out of the recording.
What gets recorded?
When a Zoom meeting is being recorded, the recording typically captures:
- Video and audio of all participants
- Screen shares and presentations
- Chat messages sent to “Everyone” (not private chats in most cases)
You’ll also see a red “Recording” indicator in the top-left corner of the Zoom window for the entire time recording is active.
Who can see the recording?
That depends on how the host set things up:
- Local recording — the file is saved to the host’s computer. Only they have it unless they share it.
- Cloud recording — the file is saved to Zoom’s servers. The host controls who gets access, and participants may receive a link automatically.
You generally cannot access the recording yourself unless the host shares it with you.
When should you worry?
In most cases, meeting recordings are normal — especially for work meetings, classes, and webinars. But be cautious if:
- You’re in a sensitive or personal conversation you didn’t expect to be recorded
- The host didn’t verbally mention the recording or explain why
- You’re unsure where the recording will be stored or who will have access
If you’re uncomfortable, it’s completely fine to ask the host why the meeting is being recorded and where the recording will go before continuing.
