What does "Age Verification Required" mean on YouTube?

The short answer

YouTube is asking you to prove you’re old enough to watch a video that’s been flagged as age-restricted content.

Why does this appear?

Some YouTube videos contain content that isn’t suitable for younger viewers, such as:

  • Violence or graphic content
  • Mature themes or language
  • Discussions of dangerous activities
  • Content that could be disturbing for children

YouTube uses age restrictions to comply with laws in many countries that require platforms to keep certain content away from minors. When you try to watch one of these videos, YouTube checks whether it can confirm your age. If it can’t, you’ll see this message.

How to verify your age

There are a few ways to get past this screen:

  • Sign in to your Google account — If your account already has a birthdate showing you’re 18 or older, that’s usually enough.
  • Update your birthdate — Go to your Google Account settings, then “Personal info,” and make sure your date of birth is filled in.
  • Submit an ID — In some countries (especially in the EU), YouTube may ask you to upload a government ID or credit card to verify your age. Google says it deletes this data after verification.

When should you worry?

  • If you’re already signed in and over 18, this is usually just a settings issue. Double-check that your Google account has your correct birthdate.
  • If YouTube asks for your ID, this is a legitimate request in certain regions due to local regulations. Make sure you’re on the real YouTube website (youtube.com) and not a phishing page before submitting anything.
  • If you see this on every video, your account age may be set incorrectly, or your region may have stricter verification laws.

Good to know

Age verification is tied to your Google account, not your device. Once verified, you won’t need to do it again unless you sign out or switch accounts. If you use YouTube without signing in, age-restricted videos simply won’t be available to you.
