What does 'NAT type: Strict' mean on Xbox?
The short answer
NAT type Strict means your router is heavily restricting incoming connections, which makes it difficult or impossible to join multiplayer games, party chat, or host matches on Xbox.
What is NAT?
NAT stands for Network Address Translation. It’s how your router manages traffic between your home network and the internet. Xbox checks your NAT type to determine how easily other players can connect to you.
There are three NAT types on Xbox:
- Open — no restrictions, you can connect to anyone
- Moderate — some restrictions, most things work fine
- Strict — heavy restrictions, many multiplayer features won’t work
What problems does Strict NAT cause?
With a Strict NAT type, you’ll likely run into these issues:
- Can’t join multiplayer lobbies or get matched very slowly
- Party chat doesn’t work or you can’t hear certain people
- Can’t host games for other players
- Limited matchmaking — you can only connect to players with Open NAT
How to fix it
Try these steps in order, starting with the simplest:
1. Restart your router
Unplug your router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. This fixes the problem more often than you’d expect.
2. Enable UPnP on your router
Log into your router’s settings (usually by visiting 192.168.1.1 in a browser) and look for a setting called UPnP (Universal Plug and Play). Turn it on. This lets your Xbox automatically open the connections it needs.
3. Set up port forwarding
If UPnP doesn’t help, you can manually open the ports Xbox needs. Forward these ports to your Xbox’s IP address:
- Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
- Port 88 (UDP)
- Port 500 (UDP)
- Port 3544 (UDP)
4. Check for double NAT
If you have two routers (for example, your ISP’s modem-router combo plus your own router), you may have double NAT, which almost always results in a Strict type. Put one device into bridge mode or connect through only one router.
When should you worry?
If you only play single-player games or don’t use party chat, Strict NAT won’t affect you at all. But if multiplayer is important to you, it’s worth fixing — an Open NAT type gives you the best experience with the fewest connection issues.
