What does 'Windows Error Recovery' screen mean?
The short answer
Windows tried to start but failed, so it’s giving you options to either fix the problem or start normally — it usually means the last shutdown or startup went wrong.
Why does it happen?
The Windows Error Recovery screen appears when your computer detects that the previous startup didn’t finish properly. Common reasons include:
- An unexpected shutdown — a power outage, holding the power button, or a crash interrupted Windows while it was running
- A failed Windows update — an update didn’t install correctly and left the system in a broken state
- A bad driver or software change — something you recently installed is preventing Windows from loading
- Hard drive problems — errors on the disk are stopping Windows from reading the files it needs to start
- Corrupted system files — critical Windows files got damaged or deleted
How to fix it
Try these steps in order:
- Choose “Start Windows Normally” — sometimes the issue was a one-time glitch, and Windows will boot fine on the second try
- Select “Last Known Good Configuration” — this rolls back to settings from the last time Windows started successfully
- Boot into Safe Mode — choose “Safe Mode” from the recovery menu, then uninstall any recently added software or drivers
- Run Startup Repair — if the recovery screen offers it, select “Launch Startup Repair” and let Windows try to fix itself automatically
- Use System Restore — boot from a Windows installation USB, go to “Repair your computer,” and restore to an earlier point in time
- Check your hard drive — from the recovery command prompt, run
chkdsk /f /rto scan for and repair disk errors
When should you worry?
If choosing “Start Windows Normally” works and the screen doesn’t come back, it was likely a one-time problem. But if you keep seeing it:
- Your hard drive may be failing — frequent boot errors are a common early sign of a dying drive, so back up your files immediately
- A recent change broke something — boot into Safe Mode and undo whatever you last installed or updated
- Windows may need reinstalling — if nothing else works, the installation itself may be too damaged to repair
