What does 'Unable to join the network' mean?

The short answer

“Unable to join the network” means your device tried to connect to a WiFi network but something went wrong during the process. This is most common on iPhones and iPads, but it can happen on any device.

Why does this happen?

Your device needs to exchange the right credentials and settings with the router before it can get online. When any part of that process fails, you see this error. Common causes include:

  • Wrong password — the most common reason, even a single wrong character will cause it
  • The network password was recently changed — your device still has the old one saved
  • Router glitch — the router is temporarily stuck or overloaded
  • Too far from the router — weak signal strength can cause the connection to fail partway through
  • Network settings got corrupted — saved WiFi data on your device became outdated or broken
  • IP address conflict — the router can’t assign your device a unique address on the network

How to fix it

  1. Forget the network and rejoin — go to WiFi settings, tap the network name, select “Forget This Network,” then reconnect with the correct password
  2. Restart your device — a simple reboot clears temporary glitches
  3. Restart the router — unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and wait a minute
  4. Toggle WiFi off and on — turn WiFi off in Settings, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on
  5. Reset network settings — on iPhone, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset > Reset Network Settings (this erases all saved WiFi passwords)
  6. Check for software updates — outdated software can cause connection issues

When should you worry?

Most of the time, forgetting and rejoining the network fixes this immediately. But pay attention if:

  • Every network gives you this error — your device’s WiFi hardware may be failing
  • The error returns right after fixing it — the router may need a firmware update or replacement
  • Other devices connect fine but yours won’t — try resetting your network settings or contact your device manufacturer
