What does "Received" mean on Snapchat?

The short answer

“Received” on Snapchat means the other person’s snap or message has arrived on your device but you haven’t opened it yet.

How Snapchat statuses work

Snapchat uses a series of statuses to show you exactly where a message is in its journey:

  • Sent — the snap or message left your device
  • Delivered — it reached the other person’s device
  • Received — it arrived on your device (you’re the recipient)
  • Opened — the recipient viewed it

So “Received” is what you see under a snap or chat that someone sent to you. It’s the other side of “Delivered.”

What the icon colors mean

The color of the Received icon tells you what type of content it is:

  • Purple square — you received a snap with audio
  • Red square — you received a photo snap
  • Blue square — you received a text chat message

If the square is filled in, you haven’t opened it yet. Once you view it, the icon becomes an empty outline and the status changes to “Opened” on the sender’s end.

Why does it say Received but I can’t see it?

If you see “Received” but the snap won’t load, try these steps:

  • Check your internet connection — snaps need a stable connection to fully download
  • Force close and reopen the Snapchat app
  • Clear the app cache — go to Settings, then Clear Cache
  • Update the app — an outdated version can cause loading issues

When should you worry?

The “Received” status is completely normal and just means a snap is waiting for you. However, keep in mind:

  • Senders can see you received their snap — so they know it reached your device even if you haven’t opened it
  • Leaving snaps on Received too long can affect your Snapstreaks if you’re trying to maintain one
  • If snaps stay stuck on Received, it’s usually a connection or app issue, not something the sender did
