What does a Quick Share notification mean on Samsung?
The short answer
A Quick Share notification means someone nearby is trying to send you a file, or that your phone is currently visible to others for file sharing.
What is Quick Share?
Quick Share is Samsung’s built-in file sharing feature. It works similarly to Apple’s AirDrop and lets you send photos, videos, links, and other files between nearby devices wirelessly.
When you see a Quick Share notification, it usually means one of two things:
- Someone is sending you a file and your phone is asking whether you want to accept it
- Your phone is visible to nearby devices and available to receive files
Should you accept it?
Only accept Quick Share transfers from people you know and trust. If you get a random request from an unknown device:
- Decline it immediately
- Don’t accept files from strangers, as they could contain inappropriate content
- Be especially cautious in crowded public places like trains, malls, or airports
How to control Quick Share
You can adjust who can send you files through Quick Share:
- Open Settings then tap Connected devices or Nearby device sharing
- Tap Quick Share
- Choose who can share with you:
- No one turns it off completely
- Contacts only limits sharing to people in your contacts
- Anyone nearby allows any nearby device to send you files
Turn it off quickly
Pull down your notification shade, swipe to find the Quick Share tile, and tap it to toggle it off. This is the fastest way to stop unwanted requests.
When should you worry?
In most cases, Quick Share notifications are harmless. However, you should be concerned if:
- You keep getting requests from unknown devices in public. Someone may be trying to send unwanted content. Switch your setting to Contacts only or No one.
- Files are being received without your approval. This could mean your settings are too open. Check your Quick Share permissions right away.
- You accidentally accepted something suspicious. Delete the file without opening it and run a security scan using your phone’s built-in protection.
Keeping Quick Share set to Contacts only gives you the best balance between convenience and privacy.
