What does a Presidential Alert on my phone mean?

A Presidential Alert is a nationwide emergency message sent by the federal government through FEMA to warn you about a serious threat to public safety.

What triggers a Presidential Alert?

Presidential Alerts are part of the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) system, managed by FEMA. They are reserved for situations where the entire country needs to be informed, such as:

  • National emergencies — major threats to public safety or national security
  • Imminent dangers — events affecting the entire country or large regions
  • System tests — FEMA occasionally sends nationwide tests to make sure the system works

Unlike AMBER Alerts or severe weather warnings, Presidential Alerts are only sent when authorized at the federal level. They are rare by design.

Why did it make such a loud noise?

Presidential Alerts override your phone’s sound settings. Even if your phone is on silent or Do Not Disturb, the alert will:

  • Play a loud, unique tone that’s different from other emergency alerts
  • Vibrate your phone for several seconds
  • Display a full-screen message that you must dismiss manually

This is intentional. The alert is designed to reach everyone, regardless of their phone settings.

Can you turn off Presidential Alerts?

No. Unlike other emergency alerts (weather, AMBER), Presidential Alerts cannot be disabled. Every phone that supports WEA will receive them. This is mandated by federal law to ensure critical messages reach the entire population.

When should you worry?

Read the message carefully. If it contains specific instructions, follow them. Presidential Alerts are only sent for genuinely serious situations.

  • If it says “This is a test”, no action is needed
  • If it describes a real emergency, follow the instructions in the message and check official news sources for updates
  • If you’re unsure, visit ready.gov or turn on local news for more details

There is no reason to call 911 about the alert itself. Emergency lines should stay open for people who need immediate help.
