What does the orange dot indicator mean on iPhone?
The short answer
The orange dot means an app on your iPhone is currently using your microphone.
Why does it appear?
Apple introduced the orange dot in iOS 14 as a privacy feature. Whenever any app accesses your microphone, a small orange dot appears in the top-right corner of your status bar.
There’s also a green dot — that one means an app is using your camera (or both the camera and microphone together).
These indicators exist so you always know when an app is listening or watching, even if the app doesn’t make it obvious.
How to check which app is using your mic
You don’t have to guess which app triggered the orange dot:
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center
- Look at the top of Control Center — it will show the name of the app currently using your microphone
- If the app recently stopped, it will say the app name followed by “recently”
Common apps that trigger the orange dot
You’ll see the orange dot during everyday activities like:
- Phone calls or FaceTime calls
- Voice messages in iMessage, WhatsApp, or other messaging apps
- Voice assistants — Siri, Google Assistant, or Alexa
- Voice search in apps like Google or YouTube
- Audio recording apps like Voice Memos
When should you worry?
The orange dot is usually harmless. But pay attention if:
- You see it when no app should be using your mic — nothing is open, no calls active, and you didn’t trigger Siri
- It appears repeatedly with a specific app you don’t trust
- An app you never gave microphone permission to seems to be triggering it
If something looks off, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone to review which apps have microphone access and turn off any that shouldn’t.
