What does 'Mailbox Full' mean?
The short answer
“Mailbox Full” means your email account has used all its available storage, so new messages can’t be delivered until you free up space.
Why does this happen?
Every email account comes with a storage limit. When you hit that limit, the mail server rejects new incoming messages. Common reasons your mailbox fills up:
- Large attachments — a few emails with big files can eat up space fast
- Years of old emails — messages pile up over time, especially if you never delete anything
- Spam and junk mail — unwanted emails quietly taking up storage in the background
- Trash and deleted items — deleted emails often still count toward your storage until you permanently remove them
- Sent mail — copies of every email you send also take up space
How to fix it
- Empty your Trash folder — deleted emails still use storage until you permanently erase them
- Delete large emails — sort your inbox by size and remove emails with big attachments you no longer need
- Clear spam and junk — empty your spam folder completely
- Archive or download — save important old emails locally, then delete them from the server
- Unsubscribe from newsletters — stop the flow of emails you never read
- Upgrade your storage — if you regularly hit the limit, consider a paid plan with more space
What happens to emails sent while your mailbox is full?
When someone tries to email you and your mailbox is full, the sender usually gets a bounce-back message letting them know the delivery failed. Those emails are not queued or saved — they simply don’t arrive. Once you free up space, you’ll need to ask the sender to resend any messages you missed.
When should you worry?
- If you keep hitting the limit, it may be time to upgrade your email plan or switch to a provider with more storage
- If your mailbox fills up unexpectedly fast, check for spam or a mailing list flooding your inbox
- If you rely on email for work, set up a habit of cleaning your inbox regularly so you never miss important messages
