What does the notification badge on Mac Notification Center mean?

The short answer

The notification badge is a small number on the clock or date in your menu bar that tells you how many unread notifications you have waiting.

What triggers the badge?

The badge appears when one or more apps have sent you notifications that you haven’t opened or dismissed yet. Common sources include:

  • Calendar — upcoming events or reminders
  • Mail — new emails
  • Messages — unread texts or iMessages
  • App Store — available updates
  • Third-party apps — Slack, Teams, or any app with notification permissions

The number on the badge reflects the total count of unread notifications across all apps.

How to check your notifications

Click the date and time in the top-right corner of your menu bar. This opens Notification Center, where you can see all your pending notifications grouped by app.

  • Click a notification to open the related app
  • Hover and click the X to dismiss a single notification
  • Click “Clear All” on a group to dismiss all notifications from that app

Once you clear or interact with the notifications, the badge number goes down or disappears.

How to reduce unwanted badges

If the badge is always showing and you find it distracting:

  1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS)
  2. Go to Notifications
  3. Select the app you want to adjust
  4. Turn off Badge app icon or Allow notifications entirely

You can do this for each app individually, so you only get badges from apps that matter to you.

When should you worry?

The notification badge is completely normal and not a sign of any problem. However:

  • A suddenly high number may mean an app is spamming you — check which app is responsible and adjust its settings
  • A badge that won’t go away can sometimes be fixed by opening Notification Center and clearing everything, or restarting your Mac
  • Unexpected notifications from unknown apps could mean you accidentally granted notification permissions to something — revoke access in System Settings
