What does the Bedtime Mode notification mean?
The short answer
The Bedtime Mode notification means your phone has activated a scheduled sleep mode that silences notifications and dims your screen to help you wind down for sleep.
What does Bedtime Mode actually do?
When Bedtime Mode kicks in, your phone makes several changes:
- Silences notifications — calls, texts, and app alerts won’t buzz or ring
- Dims the screen — the display may go grayscale or reduce brightness
- Hides notifications — alerts are held until morning instead of showing on your lock screen
- Limits distractions — some phones will remind you to stop scrolling if you unlock the device
On Android, this feature lives in the Digital Wellbeing settings or Clock app. On iPhone, it’s part of the Focus system (previously called Do Not Disturb during Bedtime in older iOS versions).
How is it different from Do Not Disturb?
Bedtime Mode is specifically designed for sleep, while Do Not Disturb is a general silence toggle. The key differences:
- Grayscale screen — Bedtime Mode often turns your display black and white to make your phone less appealing
- Sleep schedule — it turns on and off automatically based on your set bedtime and wake time
- Morning summary — when you wake up, you get a summary of what you missed overnight
How to turn it off or adjust it
If Bedtime Mode is activating when you don’t want it to:
- Android — go to Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Bedtime Mode and toggle it off or change the schedule
- iPhone — go to Settings > Focus > Sleep and adjust your schedule or disable it entirely
- Quick toggle — you can also swipe down on your notification shade and tap the Bedtime Mode icon to turn it off immediately
When should you worry?
You shouldn’t. Bedtime Mode is harmless and doesn’t block emergency calls. If you’re missing important notifications overnight, check your allowed contacts list in the settings to let certain people reach you even during Bedtime Mode.
