What does "Battery Optimization" mean?

The short answer

It means your phone is limiting what apps can do in the background to make your battery last longer.

What it actually does

Battery optimization is a built-in feature on Android phones (iPhones have a similar feature called “Low Power Mode” and “Background App Refresh”). When it’s turned on for an app, your phone may:

  • Stop the app from running in the background when you’re not using it
  • Delay or block notifications from that app
  • Prevent the app from syncing data until you open it again
  • Restrict location tracking when the app is closed

This is your phone trying to save power by stopping apps from doing things you might not notice.

When should you worry?

Battery optimization is usually helpful, but it can cause problems with certain apps:

  • Messaging apps — you might miss notifications from WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram
  • Alarm and reminder apps — alarms may not go off on time
  • Fitness trackers — step counting or workout tracking may stop when the screen is off
  • Smart home apps — automations may not trigger correctly
  • Email apps — new emails might not arrive until you open the app

If you’re missing notifications or an app isn’t working properly in the background, battery optimization is often the reason.

How to turn it off for specific apps

You don’t need to disable it for everything, just for apps that need to run reliably in the background.

On Android

  • Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Optimization
  • Find the app you want to change
  • Select “Don’t optimize” or “Unrestricted”

The exact steps vary by phone brand. Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei each have their own version of these settings, sometimes called “App Power Management” or “Battery Usage”.

On iPhone

  • Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh
  • Toggle on the apps that need to run in the background

Turning off battery optimization for a few important apps won’t significantly hurt your battery life, but it will make sure those apps work the way they should.
