What does "Active Status" mean on Messenger?
The short answer
Active Status on Messenger shows your friends whether you’re currently online or how long ago you were last active.
How it works
When Active Status is turned on, your contacts can see one of two things next to your name:
- A green dot — you’re currently using Messenger or Facebook
- A timestamp — something like “Active 2h ago,” meaning you were last online two hours ago
This applies to both the Messenger app and Facebook chat on desktop.
What counts as “active”
You don’t have to be typing a message to show as active. Any of these will trigger it:
- Having the Messenger app open on your phone
- Browsing Facebook in a browser or app
- Running Messenger in the background on some devices
Even if you’re just scrolling your feed and not touching Messenger at all, you may still appear active.
How to turn it off
If you’d rather not broadcast when you’re online, you can disable it:
- Open Messenger
- Tap your profile picture in the top left
- Tap Active Status
- Toggle it off
There’s an important trade-off: if you turn off your Active Status, you also won’t be able to see when others are active. It works both ways.
When should you worry?
Active Status is harmless, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
- It can create social pressure — people may wonder why you’re online but not replying to them
- It’s not always accurate — background app activity can make you appear active when you’re not actually using your phone
- It doesn’t track your location — it only shows that you used Messenger or Facebook recently, nothing more
If the green dot is causing you unwanted messages or awkward conversations, just turn it off. There’s no downside other than losing visibility into other people’s status.
