How to update your LinkedIn profile
The short answer
Sign in to LinkedIn, click your profile photo, then use the pencil icons to edit your headline, experience, skills, and other sections.
How to edit your basic info
This includes your name, headline, location, and profile photo:
- Go to linkedin.com and sign in
- Click your profile photo at the top, then click View Profile
- Click the pencil icon near the top of your profile
- Update your name, headline, location, or industry
- Click Save
To change your profile photo, click your current photo and select Upload photo. Use a clear, professional headshot.
How to update your work experience
- On your profile, scroll to the Experience section
- Click the + icon to add a new role, or click the pencil icon next to an existing one to edit it
- Fill in the job title, company name, dates, and a brief description of what you did
- Click Save
Keep descriptions short and focus on results rather than responsibilities.
How to update your headline
Your headline is the text right below your name. It shows up in search results, so make it count:
- Click the pencil icon at the top of your profile
- Find the Headline field
- Write something specific like “Marketing Manager | Content Strategy & SEO” instead of just your job title
- Click Save
You get 220 characters, so use them to highlight what you do and what makes you valuable.
How to add or update skills
- Scroll to the Skills section on your profile
- Click the + icon to add new skills, or click the pencil icon to reorder or remove existing ones
- Add skills that match the job roles you want — LinkedIn lets others endorse you for these
Pin your top 3 skills so they show first.
Tips for a stronger profile
- Write a summary in the About section — 2 to 3 sentences about who you are and what you do
- Turn on Open to Work (visible only to recruiters) if you are job hunting — find this under your profile photo
- Set a custom URL by clicking Edit public profile & URL on the right side of your profile page
- Keep it current — update your profile whenever you change roles, learn a new skill, or finish a project
