How to update apps on a smart TV

The short answer

Open your TV’s app store, find the app you want to update, and select “Update” — most smart TVs also have an auto-update setting you can turn on.

How to update apps on Samsung TVs

  • Press the Home button on your remote
  • Go to Apps
  • Select the Settings icon (gear) in the top-right corner
  • Choose the app you want to update and select Update, or turn on Auto Update to keep all apps current

If an update is available, you’ll see it listed here. If not, the app is already up to date.

How to update apps on LG TVs (webOS)

  • Press the Home button on your remote
  • Open the LG Content Store
  • Go to My Apps
  • Select an app and choose Update if one is available

You can also check for updates by hovering over an app on the home screen — a small notification will appear if an update is ready.

How to update apps on Sony or Android TV

  • Press the Home button on your remote
  • Open the Google Play Store
  • Go to My Apps
  • Select Update All or choose individual apps to update

Android TV handles updates much like a phone. You can also enable auto-updates in the Play Store settings.

How to update apps on Roku TV

Roku updates apps automatically in the background. To force a manual check:

  • Highlight the app on your home screen
  • Press the Star (*) button on your remote
  • Select Check for updates

Turn on auto-updates

Most smart TVs let you enable automatic app updates so you never have to think about it. Look for an Auto Update toggle in your TV’s app store settings. This keeps your streaming apps running smoothly without any effort.

When updates don’t appear

If you can’t find an update for an app:

  • Check your internet connection — your TV needs Wi-Fi to download updates
  • Restart your TV by unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in
  • Update your TV’s firmware — sometimes apps need a newer system version
  • Delete and reinstall the app — this forces the latest version to install
