How to set up a password manager
The short answer
Pick a password manager app, create an account with a strong master password, and start saving your logins as you browse.
Step 1: Choose a password manager
You have several solid options. Here are the most popular ones:
- Bitwarden — free and open-source, works on everything
- 1Password — polished and easy to use, costs around $3/month
- Apple Passwords — built into iPhones, iPads, and Macs at no cost
- Google Password Manager — built into Chrome, free
If you are not sure, Bitwarden is a great starting point because it is free and works across all devices.
Step 2: Create your account
Download the app or browser extension and sign up. You will need to create a master password. This is the one password you will need to remember, so make it strong:
- Use at least 12 characters
- Mix in uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
- Try a passphrase like “correct-horse-battery-staple” — long and easy to remember
Write this master password down and store it somewhere safe, like a locked drawer. If you lose it, most password managers cannot recover your account.
Step 3: Install the browser extension and mobile app
Install the password manager’s browser extension on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or whatever you use. Then install the mobile app on your phone. This lets the manager autofill passwords everywhere you log in.
Step 4: Start saving your passwords
You have two options:
- Import existing passwords from your browser’s saved passwords (most managers walk you through this)
- Save as you go — the next time you log into a site, the manager will offer to save your credentials
Step 5: Let it generate new passwords
Whenever you create a new account or update an old password, use the manager’s password generator. It will create long, random passwords that are nearly impossible to guess. You will never need to remember them.
Tips for staying secure
- Turn on two-factor authentication on your password manager account for extra protection
- Never share your master password with anyone
- Keep the app updated so you always have the latest security fixes
- Review your saved passwords occasionally and update any that are weak or reused
