How to set up fingerprint unlock on Android

The short answer

Go to Settings > Security > Fingerprint Unlock, then follow the prompts to scan your finger and set a backup PIN or pattern.

How to set it up

The exact menu names vary slightly by phone brand, but the steps are nearly identical on all Android devices.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Security (or Security & privacy on some phones)
  3. Tap Fingerprint unlock (may also be called Biometrics or Fingerprints)
  4. If prompted, enter your existing PIN, pattern, or password — or create one as a backup
  5. Tap Add fingerprint
  6. Place your finger on the sensor and lift it repeatedly when prompted
  7. Adjust the angle slightly each time so the phone captures the edges of your finger
  8. When the scan reaches 100%, tap Done

The fingerprint sensor is usually on the back of the phone, on the side power button, or under the screen depending on your model.

Tips for a reliable scan

  • Use dry, clean fingers — moisture or lotion can cause failed reads
  • Register the same finger twice if it frequently fails to unlock
  • Add multiple fingers — most phones allow 3 to 5 fingerprints, so register your thumb and index finger on both hands
  • Press firmly on under-display sensors, as they sometimes need more pressure than side-mounted ones

When should you worry?

If your fingerprint stops working after a phone update, try deleting the saved fingerprint and re-registering it. This fixes most issues.

If the sensor consistently fails to recognize you, check for a screen protector blocking the sensor (common with under-display readers). Switching to a compatible protector usually solves it.

Your fingerprint data is stored locally on your phone in a secure chip — it is never uploaded to the cloud or shared with apps, so there is no privacy risk in using it.
