How to set up an Apple Watch

The short answer

Turn on your Apple Watch, hold it near your iPhone, and follow the pairing prompts — the whole process takes about 15 minutes.

Before you start

Make sure you have:

  • An iPhone running the latest version of iOS — Apple Watch requires an iPhone to set up
  • Bluetooth turned on on your iPhone
  • A Wi-Fi connection — your iPhone needs internet access during setup
  • Your Apple ID and password ready

Charge your Apple Watch before starting. It should have at least 50% battery.

Step-by-step setup

1. Turn on your Apple Watch

Press and hold the side button (below the Digital Crown) until the Apple logo appears.

2. Bring your iPhone close

Hold your iPhone near the Apple Watch. A pairing screen will appear on your iPhone automatically. Tap Continue.

3. Point your iPhone camera at the watch

A swirling animation will appear on the watch face. Center it in your iPhone camera’s viewfinder. This pairs the two devices.

4. Choose your settings

You will be asked to:

  • Set up as new or restore from a backup — if you had an Apple Watch before, you can restore your old settings
  • Sign in with your Apple ID — this connects your iCloud and Apple services
  • Choose which wrist you wear the watch on

5. Set up security

  • Create a passcode for your watch — this protects your data and enables Apple Pay
  • Enable wrist detection so the watch locks when you take it off

6. Configure features

You can enable or skip these during setup:

  • Apple Pay — add a credit or debit card to pay from your wrist
  • Siri — voice assistant access on your watch
  • Health features — emergency SOS, fall detection, and health notifications

7. Wait for syncing

Your Apple Watch will sync apps and data from your iPhone. This can take several minutes depending on how many apps you have. Keep both devices close together until it finishes.

Tips for a smooth setup

  • Keep your iPhone nearby during the entire setup — the watch depends on it
  • Update your iPhone first if a software update is available
  • Do not restart either device while syncing is in progress
  • Customize your watch face later — long-press the watch face to change it anytime
