How to fix no sound on iPhone

The short answer

Most iPhone sound issues are fixed by turning off Silent Mode, raising volume, disconnecting Bluetooth, and restarting the phone.

How to fix it

1) Check the obvious first

  • Make sure Silent Mode is off (Ring/Silent switch should not show orange).
  • Press Volume Up several times.
  • Open Control Center and confirm volume is not muted.
  • Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and raise Ringer and Alerts.

2) Rule out connection problems

  • Turn Bluetooth off in Control Center or Settings.
  • Unplug headphones or adapters.
  • If using AirPlay, switch output back to iPhone.

3) Test the speaker

  • Play a video in Photos or YouTube.
  • Try a call on Speaker.
  • If calls are quiet, clean the earpiece and speaker grills gently with a dry soft brush.

4) Restart and update

  • Restart your iPhone.
  • Update iOS in Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If still broken, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings (won’t delete photos/apps).

When should you worry?

  • No sound at all after all steps, including alarms and calls.
  • Sound is crackling or distorted.
  • Issue started after a drop or water exposure.

If any of these apply, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store, as it may be a hardware issue.
