How to enable two-factor authentication on Apple ID
The short answer
Go to Settings, tap your name, then Password & Security, and turn on Two-Factor Authentication — it only takes a minute.
What is two-factor authentication?
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second layer of security to your Apple ID. Even if someone knows your password, they cannot sign in without a six-digit verification code sent to one of your trusted devices.
How to enable it on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings
- Tap your name at the top of the screen
- Tap Sign-In & Security (or Password & Security on older versions)
- Tap Turn On Two-Factor Authentication
- Tap Continue and follow the prompts
- Enter a trusted phone number where you can receive verification codes
- Enter the verification code sent to that number
Once enabled, your device is automatically registered as a trusted device.
How to enable it on Mac
- Click the Apple menu and open System Settings
- Click your name at the top of the sidebar
- Click Sign-In & Security
- Click Turn On next to Two-Factor Authentication
- Follow the prompts and verify your trusted phone number
How to enable it from a web browser
- Go to appleid.apple.com and sign in
- In the Sign-In and Security section, find Two-Factor Authentication
- Click Turn On and follow the steps to add a trusted phone number
Things to know
- You need at least one trusted phone number — this is where Apple sends verification codes if your devices are unavailable
- You can add multiple trusted numbers in case you lose access to your primary one
- Once turned on, you cannot turn it off for most accounts — Apple requires 2FA for newer Apple IDs and many Apple services
- Keep your trusted devices updated so they can receive verification codes reliably
What if you get locked out?
If you lose access to your trusted devices and phone number:
- Use the account recovery process at iforgot.apple.com
- If you set up a Recovery Key, you will need it along with a trusted device
- Recovery Contacts (if configured) can also help you regain access
To avoid lockouts, make sure at least two trusted phone numbers are on file and keep your recovery options up to date.
Would you like to grant write permission so I can save this to the file directly?
