How to change the ringtone on your Android phone
The short answer
Go to Settings > Sound (or Sounds and vibration) > Phone ringtone, pick a tone, and tap Save or Apply.
Change your ringtone step by step
For most Android phones
- Open Settings
- Tap Sound or Sounds and vibration
- Tap Phone ringtone (sometimes under SIM or Calls)
- Listen to tones and choose one
- Tap Save, Apply, or go back to confirm
Set a different ringtone for specific contacts
- Open the Contacts app
- Pick a contact
- Tap Edit or the 3-dot menu
- Choose Set ringtone
- Pick the sound and save
Use your own song or sound
- Download or move the audio file to your phone
- In ringtone settings, tap Add ringtone or +
- Select the file from your storage
- Save it as your new ringtone
How to fix it if the ringtone won’t change
- Turn off Do Not Disturb
- Check volume: raise Ring volume
- Restart your phone
- Make sure your ringtone file still exists (not deleted/moved)
- If using dual SIM, set ringtone for the correct SIM
- Update your Phone and Settings apps if available
When should you worry?
- If sound is missing in all apps, not just calls
- If speaker sounds crackly or silent even at full volume
- If settings reset after every reboot
In those cases, test with headphones and consider a hardware check or phone repair.
